Minister of Justice Responds to the Report of the Fourth Quadrennial Commission on Judicial Compensation

Ottawa, October 12, 2012 – The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today released the Government’s Response to the Report of the fourth Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission.

“The Government recognizes the important role the judiciary plays in our society,” said Minister Nicholson. “Judges must be compensated in a manner that continues to attract outstanding candidates and protects judicial independence, while respecting the current need for fiscal restraint.”

The Judicial Compensation and Benefits Commission is established every four years to enquire into the adequacy of salary and benefits of all federally appointed judges. That enquiry takes place within the statutory framework set out in the Judges Act. This Commission delivered its Report on May 15, 2012.
